“This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.” (Luke 2:34-35)

Simeon, who waited for the day to see the Messiah in his lifetime, had some prophetic insight as he spoke to Mary.  He knew that Jesus would upend the status quo, raising up those who believe, and would be a stumbling block to those who disbelieve.  His presence would precipitate division, opposition and rejection.  And with a personal note to Mary, Simeon told her that she, as well as Jesus, would suffer deep anguish—the first reference in this Gospel to Christ’s suffering and death.

The events which would take place in the life of Jesus reveal how accurate Simeon’s words were.  The life, death, and resurrection of our Lord has changed the world and brought some very good news to those who believe in his name and accept him into their hearts and lives.

Prayer: Dear Lord, you have revealed to us in your word the ways in which you keep your promises and have brought about a multitude of changed lives.  Thank you for what you did for me, and for so many others, bringing us a free gift of salvation and eternal life.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
