“The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah.  John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” (Luke 3:15-16)

John quickly rejects the notion that he is the Messiah.  John would be the one who would help prepare the people for his arrival, by urging them to repent and to be baptized.  Then their hearts would be in the right place upon the arrival of the Messiah.

We have people in our lives who may have some questions about faith, and the role Jesus plays in all of this.  Some will come up with questions which are asked directly, while some will remain quiet, yet ponder these things in their hearts.  All of these people have a common need for Jesus in their lives.  John pointed people to Jesus, and we can do the same.  We can plant a seed of faith in their lives, and it will be up to them to make a decision for Christ.  Let’s pray for the people we know to make the right choice:

Prayer: Dear Lord, give us the words to say to anyone who has not welcomed you into their life.  May our love and compassion for them give us courage in our convictions, showing people to a way of life everlasting.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
