“Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left.” (Luke 23:32-33)
Three men were being crucified. Jesus was (and is) the one who offers the redeeming power of God. The two others were criminals and deserved punishment. One of them rejected Jesus, mocking him, saying, “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” (vs.39) The other one could see that despite a long history of sins, Jesus could save him from eternal punishment. “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” (vs. 42) He was truly repentant, and Jesus offered hope. Jesus responds by saying, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” (vs. 43)
If we want to be absolutely certain of an eternity in heaven, look at Jesus’ response to the repentant criminal. In a brief encounter with Jesus, he gets this assurance. How good it is, with repentant hearts, when we receive this same assurance!
Prayer: Dear Lord, I believe in you and your promises. You have promised those who repent a place with you in paradise. Thank you for your redeeming power. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
