“But while he was still far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion; he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him.” (Luke 15:20)

The Parable of the Prodigal Son beautifully illustrates the power of love and forgiveness.  In this parable, the son, who wasted his inheritance on foolishness, finally came to his senses and humbly sought at least a hint of reconciliation with his father.  The father, upon seeing that his son was coming home, had nothing but love and compassion for his son, being so thankful that he was coming home.

This tells us about our heavenly Father, who loves us and welcomes us back into his fold, even if we’ve hit rock bottom and have totally gone against the way of life that was meant for us.  God’s ways are the perfect example of forgiveness.  “If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

While it is good that when we repent of our sins and can seek forgiveness, we also need to remember the importance of forgiving others.  When we forgive others, it frees up our hearts and minds and allows the Spirit of God to enrich our lives.  We are so much better off, and it is so much easier to put a smile on our face, knowing that we are doing as Jesus would do.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for showing us the way to receive forgiveness and the huge burden which is lifted off of our shoulders when we forgive others.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
