Jesus continues with the Parable of the Prodigal Son, “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’” (Luke 15:17-19)-
The son comes to the realization of how good his father is. It’s the father’s goodness and love that shake the son to his senses. He realizes how good he had it before, and how good it will be once he returns to his father.
God is prompting us to not let go of all that is good. It can be the love and care of a family, or it can be the love and care of our heavenly Father who longs to keep us under his care. Sometimes we have to go full circle to realize the depth and breadth of God’s love. Don’t worry—God is still here for us and he welcomes us back.
Prayer: Dear Lord, I realize the futility of self-indulgent sin. I ask for your forgiveness, and I also know that living under your care is not only the best way, but the only way. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
