“On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” (Luke 10:25-28)
Jesus explains that the way to eternal life is simple—to love God and to love your neighbor. This command is achievable, but only if we have turned our hearts over to God, realizing the need for him in our lives. Without this commitment, the command to love God and love your neighbor is easy to push aside. Without God, we are inclined to be more self-centered. This is why Jesus proceeded to tell the story of the Good Samaritan, giving an example of someone who is moved toward loving his neighbor.
There is a void that needs to be filled in all of our lives. We can only do so much when we live for ourselves. When we invite Jesus to be with us, we begin to think outside of ourselves. Our lives are made complete.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for filling this void in my life. I know that you are with me because you have allowed love and compassion to rule within. It is with great joy that I honor and serve you, my Lord and my God. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
