“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” (Psalm 46:10)
Amidst all of the turmoil going on in the world, and the turmoil which might be taking part in our personal lives, God speaks to us: “Be still.” Instead of a demanding task which could cause additional stress, we are told to greatly lessen our stress just by taking the advice to “calm down!” or “be cool!” I find it fairly easy to follow through on this command, because what is there to not like about lowering your stress level?
The point is, we can’t control everything. Evil will continue to exist in the world, and the demands of everyday life are not likely to go away any time soon. How can we “be still?” By finding refuge in our Lord, seeking a quiet place, even if for just a few minutes, and tell your troubles to him. We can get the peace within that everybody needs, and as the hymn “Let There Be Peace on Earth” proclaims, “let it begin with me.” (my favorite hymn!)
Prayer: Dear Lord, from time to time I lose sight of the peace you give us. During those times I ask that you help me to slow down, renew my Spirit, and to know that you are in control. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
