“The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” (Luke 6:5)

Jesus and his disciples broke Jewish custom and picked grain to eat on the Sabbath.  While keeping the Sabbath meant refraining from work, the religious leaders of the day had too narrowly defined “work” for the Jewish people.  The Pharisees cared more about what Jesus’ disciples were doing than the heart motivation behind their actions.  Ultimately, Jesus has the authority to determine what is right and wrong to do on the Sabbath.

Another accusation from the Pharisees came when Jesus healed a man on the Sabbath.  Jesus responded by saying, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?” (Luke 6:9) The Pharisees were getting too carried away with strict rules, not taking into consideration how much the rules restrict us from doing good.

Let’s do good at all times.  We don’t have to be restricted as to when and where to do so.  God will guide our hearts and minds in the right direction.

Prayer: Dear Lord, keep our hearts in the right place, always eager to serve you by doing good for others.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
