“Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied.  Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.  Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.” (Luke 6:20-22)

Jesus describes the people who are blessed by God.  At first glance, this list of blessings doesn’t inspire much confidence.  Then he will go on to offer “woes” to those who seem to have it all together from the outside—the rich, the full and satisfied, those who laugh, and those who are spoken well by others.  While these are by no means absolute statements, the point is that those who have God as their friend are blessed, no matter the circumstances.  Circumstances don’t determine how “blessed” you are, only your relationship with God.  Blessing is what you find in knowing God.

Prayer: Dear Lord, I do feel blessed, because you give me peace within.  I know that this life has its share of troubles, but with you as my shield and my strength, you have given me all that I need, and you have exceeded my expectations.  Thank you, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
