“As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.” (Luke 6:47-48)
In a similar manner to a well-built house, Jesus teaches us to build our lives on God’s Word. Jesus finishes his sermon by warning those who claim to follow him yet fail to put his teaching into action--“But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.” (Luke 6:49) We must build our lives on the foundation, the “rock,” of Jesus’ words put into action. It’s not enough to simply know what Jesus says; we should put it into action.
So, let’s go ahead and put our knowledge into action. Let’s make our plans with Christ at the center of our lives and remember the promises of God from Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” We have nothing to fear and much to look forward to when we build our lives on this solid foundation.
Prayer: Dear Lord, although our lives are not free from trouble, we are thankful that we can depend on you to help us weather the storms we encounter. Thank you for being here for us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
