“To the angel of the church in Pergamum write:

These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword. I know where you live—where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me, not even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city—where Satan lives.” (Revelation 2:12-13)

The church in Pergamum had its share of challenges.  While they wanted to stay true to their faith, the enemy (Satan) was always on the prowl to cause them to compromise their faith.  “There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols and committed sexual immorality.” (Revelation 2:14)

Sin entered the life of the church and threatened it.  We have to remain faithful to God, and part of that is recognizing sin for what it is and not compromising the convictions of our faith, which we need to hold near and dear to us.  Stand strong in your beliefs, and God will honor your commitment.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help us in our striving to live holy and blameless lives.  We do this not just for our sake, but to be a witness to the world where your holy word stands the test of time.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
