“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.  Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.  All the believers were together and had everything in common.  They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.  Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.  And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” (Acts 2:42-47)

     There is a lot to admire about the early church.  Their generosity and hospitality alone set a high bar for every church community today.  If we did a side-by-side comparison of today’s churches and the early church, it is likely that we would see some differences.  This is the result of a constantly changing world, but we know that God hasn’t changed.  

     The focus of the church has and always should be on the cross of Christ.  When we remain keenly aware of the sacrifice Jesus made for us, our differences are diminished and our energies are directed toward what matters the most—making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. 

Prayer: Dear Lord, we are a diverse people, but you have brought us together as one under your Lordship.  Help us to never forget our mission and purpose, and to apply it directly to our lives and the life of the church.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
