“All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.” (Acts 2:4-6)
The Holy Spirit came to the people at Pentecost, and while everything was spoken in tongues, the people understood, because they would hear their own language being spoken as they were giving high praise to God.
This scene might appear chaotic, but it did not turn into ecstatic confusion. Instead, the disciples leaped into action, telling Jews who had gathered from all the corners of the known world about Jesus in every known language. This miracle not only foreshadows the spread of the gospel to the ends of the earth but also confirms the truth of the disciples’ message. This was a message with power which is hard to ignore.
Prayer: Dear Lord, we understand your message and help us to recognize the power you give us to carry the message to this generation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
