“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” (Luke 22:42)

     Jesus comes face-to-face with death on the cross.  He knows that it’s a short matter of time before he faces it.  He doesn’t face death defiantly like other famous leaders in history; he faces the reality of it “in anguish.” (vs. 44)

     In a very human response, Jesus admits that he wants the cup of judgment to pass from him.  Still, Jesus knows this is the cup he will drink and submits to the Father’s will.  Expressing our desires to God and then submitting them to his will requires great maturity.  It is not always easy, but when we “give it to God,” we can be at peace with the eventual outcome.

Prayer: Dear Lord, you know all that is in my heart and the things I desire, yet I give these things to you, knowing that you will provide the best possible answer.  Thank you for giving me this much-needed peace within.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
