“The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” (Luke 23:47)
The centurion present at Jesus’ crucifixion witnessed everything—the darkness that came over the land, the curtain of the temple torn in two, and the final words and commitment of Jesus, offering his spirit. This was enough to make a lasting impression on anyone who witnessed these things. God was praiseworthy, and the centurion offered this praise.
This was an event which has had an effect on our world and our personal lives ever since. How could anyone go to the lengths Jesus did for the good of all mankind? The answer is clear—it was the work of God through Jesus Christ, making this happen.
Whenever I think about all of the negative stuff going on in our world, it can be downright depressing. But I am also reminded of the alternative, of knowing a God who only stands for all of the good and righteous thoughts which should come about as a result of our faith. There is so much of the love of God to share; there is no need to focus on everything that is wrong. “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” (Philippians 4:8)
Prayer: Dear Lord, I cannot ignore the problems of a troubled world. I pray that anyone who wonders what the answer to these troubles are can look at you, and they will realize that you provide the best alternative when they commit their lives to you. May the love you bring be within all of us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
