“When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them.  Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.  They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:30-32)

     Two unsuspecting disciples encounter the risen Jesus on their way to a town called Emmaus.  Instead of knowing it was Jesus, they thought it was a stranger they were talking to.  It was not until they arrived home and broke bread with him that they recognized it was Jesus who had been with them all of this time.  They were actually given a clue that it was Jesus, because they said, “Were not our hearts burning within us?”

     In our relationship with Jesus, we should be open to what he is saying to us.  One way that we know he is speaking to us is when our “hearts burn within us.” If we are caught up in sin, our hearts convict us.  If we are faced with making decisions which affect our lives and the lives of others, our hearts burn within us as we seek help in coming up with the right answer.  It is good that we can have a relationship with our Lord and Savior, because we all need help, and help is at hand whenever we reach out to him.

Prayer: Dear Lord, we seek you because you are the Wonderful Counselor.  Help us to discern between the advice of the world and the advice you give us and help others to know that you are the way, the truth, and the life.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
