“On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.  For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 1:4-5)

     Jesus commanded his disciples to wait in Jerusalem until they were baptized by the Holy Spirit.  His command gave them a place, a purpose, and a promise, but they had to wait a few days to receive that promise. 

     Waiting on a promise (especially a promise from God) is much different than an uncertain hope.  When we know that God follows through on his promises, waiting is not as difficult.  But an uncertain hope may only turn out to be a “wish,” and we can’t always rely on things we only wish for.

     Waiting for the promise of the Holy Spirit was worth it, because this would empower the disciples to carry on Jesus’ mission to change lives.  Followers of Jesus still need the Spirit today.  As the gospel of Christ is shared, people need to know and accept God’s redeeming power.

Prayer: Dear Lord, we know that your Good News was meant to be shared, because the world needs to hear it.  Keep us encouraged every day as we continue this mission.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
