“When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” (Luke 3:21-22)
Even though John’s baptism is a baptism of repentance, Jesus submits himself to be baptized, not because he needed to repent, but because he wanted to identify with his people. He wanted to identify with our need to repent and be baptized and to model what obedience to God looks like.
Immediately after Jesus was baptized, the Holy Spirit descended on him and full recognition of his role came in a voice from heaven, “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
When we follow Jesus’ example, we also receive the Holy Spirit. It is good for us to regularly acknowledge the Holy Spirit’s presence. It guides, comforts, protects, and strengthens us. Let the Spirit be the great source for us as we face each day.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for setting the example for us and giving us your Holy Spirit. Help us to acknowledge your Spirit throughout our days. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
