“Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to? It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds perched in its branches.” Again he asked, “What shall I compare the kingdom of God to? It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until it worked all through the dough.” (Luke 13:18-21)
Jesus is teaching us that the kingdom of God is something that started out small but will grow and multiply in great numbers. The gospel has reached across the globe, with over 2 billion people responding.
It is encouraging to know how many people who have responded favorably, but at the same time, we are saddened by those we know personally who have not responded. This is explained, at least in part, when Jesus said, “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to.” (Luke 13:24)
Although we are discouraged by those who have not responded, we can pray for them and love them. We can plant a seed of hope and faith, knowing that “God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3:17)
Prayer: Dear Lord, I know of many who have not responded to your good news. I pray for them and ask that some way, somehow, their eyes will be opened to the truth, and they will accept your saving grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
