“Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:40-42)
Mary was sitting and listening to Jesus while her sister Martha was busy, working away, preparing, doing household tasks. It was a commendable effort on her part. She could not figure out why Mary wasn’t helping her, but Mary did the one thing that was necessary for all of us—listening to and learning from Jesus. Martha’s love for Jesus was demonstrated in a different way, by performing many tasks and serving Jesus and the guests, yet I am sure that at some point she listened to and learned from Jesus.
We are all wired differently. We might be more like Mary, and some of us are more like Martha. Then again, we might be a combination of the two. The important thing is that we stay in love with Jesus, learning from him and seeking his guidance. It’s good that we are all different. Regardless of who we are, we can work together as the body of Christ.
Prayer: Dear Lord, it is wonderful how unique each of us are, and you have gifted each of us in ways to honor and serve you. Help us to acknowledge, appreciate, and love you and one another. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
