“As the crowds increased, Jesus said, “This is a wicked generation. It asks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah. For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation.” (Luke 11:29-30)
Jesus essentially says that if the people of Nineveh had seen his work, they would have repented and believed more quickly than the Jews listening to him. Jesus himself is the greatest form of revelation—God’s communicating with us—in history.
In what ways do we seek signs from God instead of trusting in what he’s already revealed to be true? How can we more faithfully accept what God has chosen to reveal to us through Jesus, Scripture, and creation without coveting something we think would be better?
This is where our enduring faith comes in. God has a proven track record, so there is no need for him to continually provide “signs” in order to satisfy us. We can consider God’s word as a miracle in and of itself. We can rest assured that God communicates to us through his Word and Spirit, which reveals much about ourselves, our God, and our world.
Prayer: Dear Lord, your love and faithfulness have been revealed, and we should have no reason to doubt you. Remind us to cast our cares upon you, knowing that in due time, even if we do not have an obvious sign, you will quietly reveal each step we should take in our life’s journey. Grant that our trust in you will always remain. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
