“But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” (1 Peter 3:15)
We know that if we have put our faith in the Lord, we are aware of how much Jesus has changed our life, giving us a new outlook and eternal hope. We have been told to share these things with others, including those who have not put their faith in the Lord. It is likely that the nonbeliever would be curious and would want some answers as to what makes us so sure about the promises of God, and what is our own story regarding the changes we have experienced as a result of this.
How we share our faith will differ from one individual to the next. We can use something very basic and well-known, such as John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Regarding our personal story, be genuine and down-to-earth, and try to put yourself in the shoes of the people you talk to. They may or may not be ready to make a decision for Christ. Respect their non-decision, love them and pray for them, knowing that you have planted a seed in their life, a seed of faith which could grow and flourish. God is patient with us, and we can be patient with others.
Prayer: Dear Lord, give me the words to say as I share the joy I have in knowing you. Help me to be loving, patient and respectful to all who still need to make a decision for you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
