“Jesus was about thirty years old when he began his work. He was the son (as was thought) of Joseph.” (Luke 3:23)
Luke’s genealogy concerning Jesus goes all the way to the beginning, with Adam. He refers to Adam as “son of God.” “Son of Enos, son of Seth, son of Adam, son of God.” (Luke 3:38) Luke highlights Jesus’ role as humanity’s representative-Jew and Gentile-as the “Son of God,” like Adam, the first human. Jesus, the true “Son of God,” regained the universal “sonship” for all humanity lost by Adam.
Luke uses this genealogy to make the point that Jesus is the new and better Adam, who, instead of falling for Satan’s temptation and foretelling the gift of sonship, resists temptation by trusting God and demonstrates genuine sonship. From this, we can see how trusting in Jesus, the Son of God, is the one we should be seeking.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to trust in you above everything else. Thank you for being here for us, making things right for all humanity. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
