“When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken.” (Luke 5:8-9)
Simon Peter had a true sense of awe regarding Jesus and his ability to direct him to the location where he would catch such a huge quantity of fish. When he said, “Go away from me, Lord,” it wasn’t a rejection of Jesus, asking him to leave; it was Peter’s feeling of unworthiness combined with a high respect for the Lord. The attitude of Peter was something that qualified him to become a disciple of Jesus.
Can we accept our position in relation to our Lord? Can we possess a sense of humility, knowing our weaknesses, yet looking to God as our source of strength, depending on him to guide us and accepting his mission for our lives as one of his disciples? People are looking for something to bring a sense of true fulfillment, and when we have Christ at the center of our lives, people outside of our faith will see our way of life, and Lord willing, they will want to make a decision for Christ. This is a high calling, but it is one that can help to add people to the community of faith.
Prayer: Dear Lord, as a forgiven sinner, you have made a difference in my life. Help me to live out my faith so that others will understand how good, faithful, and trustworthy you are, and what a wonderful thing it is to have you as Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
