“Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.” (Luke 6:37)
When our lives have been transformed through the saving power of Christ, we are taught to not judge others. While it might be easy to look down on others, we are to look within regarding our own shortcomings. Personally, I find myself lacking in many ways, so it is wise when I steer clear of judging others. God knows my heart, and he knows if I have been hypocritical, and that is when I stand condemned.
When Jesus was asked what to do in dealing with the woman caught in the act of adultery, he said, “Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” (John 8:7) And after everyone else left leaving her unharmed, he asked her, “Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, sir.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go your way, and from now on do not sin again.” (John 8:10-11) This is the approach our Lord would like us to take. We should not ignore sin, and acknowledge it for what it is, but we can love the sinner (all of us) We should realize our own human frailties, seeking renewal in the Spirit and a new way of life.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for your redeeming power and changed lives. Forgive me for the times when I have judged others and help me to always look within. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
