While teaching in the synagogue in his hometown of Nazareth, Jesus quotes the prophet Isaiah:
““The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” (Luke 4:18-21)
The people in Jesus’ hometown were amazed by his assertion, but then they started to become confused, “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” (vs. 22) They could not believe that the carpenter’s son could make this claim, and the people began to turn against him, to the point of driving him out of town and intending to “throw him off the cliff” (vs. 29)
Not everybody is ready to accept the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We can state our case and tell our story, but we do not have to try and win a debate or argument. Pray for them and ask God to search their hearts. God works miracles, and a great miracle occurs whenever anyone is ready to accept the love of our Lord.
Prayer: Dear Lord, you know the people in my life who are not ready to accept your message, and I pray for them. I am asking for their eyes to be opened to the truth, and for a great miracle to take place in their hearts. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
