“To the angel of the church in Sardis write:

These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead.  Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God.” (Revelation 3:1-2)

The church in Sardis looked good on the outside.  They had a good reputation, but something was missing.  Jesus knew their works, and he could see that they were lacking in spiritual formation, just going through the motions.

We want to worship in Spirit and truth, and not just “put in our time” on Sunday or any other time during the week.  Our relationship with Christ matters very much.  Our works should not remain “unfinished.” We can rely on the Spirit to build our character, making us the people we were meant to be.

Prayer: Dear Lord, I am reminded that I should take joy in everything I do for you—through worship and through works.  Renew my Spirit each day.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
