“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for.” (Hebrews 11:1-2)
The author of Hebrews gives us an excellent definition of faith. He goes on to revisit the stories of how faith was evident in the lives of many of the people we read about in the Old Testament. For example, he recalls the faith of Abraham, who was “called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.” (Hebrews 11:8) He would go on to be known as “father of many nations.” He could have ignored this, not obeying God’s instructions, but Abraham’s faith was in events that had not yet happened; things that were yet unseen.
We don’t know for sure what the future holds, but we do know that when we listen to what God is trying to tell us, we will not be misled. We will be able to cope with the troubles we encounter and rejoice at the good things we have already and are yet to come our way.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to deal with the uncertainties in my life. Give me the peace within to know that as I follow you, your love does not fail. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
